Top 10 Hobbies for Retirees to Enjoy

I started making my retirement bucket list when I turned 63. I wanted to have some goals in my pre and post-retirement years. I wanted to try comfortable challenges and new things to stretch my mind. I started with my technology interest. This is my comfort zone. I started learning a new programming language called Flutter. I signed up for a course via Udemey. They have many courses for about any topic. I try to commit a few hours a week to finishing the Flutter course. To be honest, it has been a challenge to stay motivated to complete the Flutter course. I had a few other projects jump ahead that were more fun. Starting this blog was one of my goals in pre-retirement, and I wanted to start sharing my experiences. I find that once I learn something and master the basics. I become bored with it and find something else to tackle. I am not sure if that is a good or bad thing.

I have regularly gone to the gym for 8 years, 5 days a week. My physical health has kept my doctor happy with my gym work. I’m just trying to stay trim and maintain my core body strength. The number one problem with seniors is we lose core body strength if we do not try to maintain it. I am not suggesting everyone sign up for a gym membership. You must check with your healthcare provider before starting any new physical activity.

I am looking to what volunteer work I wish to sign on for when I officially stop working sometime in the next 4 years. There are several city government volunteer boards I can sign up for and possibly get selected. We have many charitable organizations and a few interest me as well. It is all about balance. Volunteering is work. So research and ask if you can shadow the person in the area where you want to volunteer. Answering the phone is less physical than filling and sorting food to give out at the local food bank.

With today’s free Zoom online meeting software, you can join a book club remotely or choose other volunteer options from home. There is nothing wrong with volunteering and finding out it is not a fit for you. Just graciously tell your volunteer leader you need to bow out.
