Senior Man retiree pressing button to open his garage by remotely

Upgrade Garage Door Opener for Safety

My View:

My neighbor had left his garage door open once or twice, and it happened again today. I walked across the street to his home and knocked on his door to remind him to close it. I have also done this myself at my home on rare occasions. I have driven away and forgotten to close the door, or something felt and blocked the door from closing due to the emergency reverse that is built into modern door mechanical closers.

My one suggestion is to keep an eye on your neighbor’s homes. We do have a neighborhood group that meets every 6 months or so. I know most of the cars that travel our street of 10 homes on a dead-end street. You could set up a neighborhood watch.

I do not like leaving my home with the garage door open. It invites theft to happen. I left it open on one occasion, but luckily, nothing was taken from the garage overnight. We do live on a dead-end street, which keeps some with theft in mind to bypass our street.

Lucky for us, they now make smart garage door lift openers and upgraded wall controllers to automate and monitor the door status of open or closed. As with most smart devices in the home today, most will also have a mobile app to work with. It is one of a few SMART devices I have installed in my house.

Monitoring the status of your garage door is part of home security. I could upgrade the standard manufacturer-supplied open/close button that came with my garage door Liftmaster unit. The upgraded wall controller replaced the simple factory switch. The replacement had a few more options. The most important was an auto-close feature that I could set for the time limit. I selected that if the door is open for more than 10 minutes, it will notify my cellphone. Then, the unit will close the garage door after 4 warning tones.

If you have a very new automobile with SMART features. My car will also shut the garage door after I pull away from my home. I have not set this since. I am not parking inside my garage because several boxes of items are being stored temporarily in the garage. One last feature I like about the upgraded controller is its lock-out into vacation mode. If I leave my home for a few days or more, I can press the lock button, and all remotes will not open the door. Even the keypad most have outside near the door.

Section 3: Installation Process and Tips

Installing a mobile-controlled garage door opener might seem daunting, but it’s quite manageable with the right approach.

First, choose a compatible opener. Ensure it works with your existing garage door system. Modern mobile-controlled openers are designed to be compatible with a wide range of models, but it’s always best to double-check.

Once you have your new opener, follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. Start by disconnecting your old opener and preparing the mounting area for the new system. This typically involves securing the new opener to the ceiling of your garage and connecting it to your garage door.

Next, install the necessary sensors. These usually include safety sensors placed near the floor on either side of the garage door. They are crucial for ensuring the door doesn’t close if there’s an obstruction.

The most important part of the installation is setting up the Wi-Fi connection. This allows your opener to communicate with your smartphone app. Follow the instructions to connect the opener to your home’s Wi-Fi network. Once connected, you can use the app to configure settings, set up notifications, and test the opener.

If you encounter any issues, don’t hesitate to consult the manufacturer’s support resources or consider hiring a professional installer. It’s essential to ensure everything is set up correctly for optimal performance and safety.

Finally, take the time to familiarize yourself with the app and its features. Customize alerts, set up voice commands if compatible, and explore the various functionalities that make using your mobile-controlled garage door opener a breeze.

Section 4: Enhancing Home Security with Mobile Control

One of the most significant benefits of upgrading to a mobile-controlled garage door opener is the enhanced security it provides.

Traditional garage door openers can be vulnerable to break-ins. Thieves can capture the signal from your remote control and use it to gain access to your garage. Mobile-controlled openers use rolling code technology, which changes the access code each time it is used, making it nearly impossible for intruders to replicate.

Another security feature is real-time notifications. Your smartphone will receive an alert whenever your garage door is opened or closed. This informs you of any activity and lets you act immediately if something seems amiss.

You can also schedule your garage door to close at specific times, ensuring it’s never left open unintentionally. Geofencing technology can automatically open or close your garage door as you arrive or leave, adding an extra layer of convenience and security.

Integrating your garage door opener can enhance security even further for those with smart home systems. You can create routines that include turning on lights or activating security cameras when your garage door is operated. This not only deters potential intruders but also makes your home more responsive and intelligent.

Overall, a mobile-controlled garage door opener significantly boosts your home’s security. It provides peace of mind, knowing that your garage and home are protected by advanced technology.
