My View:
We are very lucky in today’s smartphone world. Snap great photos as quickly as you can grab your cellphone. Cellphone cameras are better than the cameras we had 10 years ago. You can take a photo, see it, and even edit or add fun filter effects and save it. You can also text that photo to family and friends from almost anywhere. If you are old school like my dad, he moved from film 35 mm cameras to a 35mm digital camera.
This greatly enhances his enjoyment of his hobbies. He took his camera everywhere when he was traveling for business consulting. I have boxes of 35 mm slides for 1960 – 1990. All my dad’s constant mapping images. His early travels with images of many jet plane wings, rental car buildings, big cities, and small cityscapes. The family also had many images of Mom, Dad, my brother and sister, and myself. from early Polaroid black and white film before Dad found 35 mm film when I was maybe 4 years old in 1961. I was lucky to have found the first generation of digital cameras just as I started to take and keep memories with photos. There are many photography classes for seniors you can find locally or online.
I had several digital cameras when I was in my 20s and 30s. Back then, they only had 1—to 4-megapixel sizes. It is amazing how much cameras have advanced since my first Kodak Brownie Camera, then a Kodak 100.
Today, smartphones have dwarfed most consumer-grade digital stand-alone cameras on the market. There is still a market for high-end digital cameras, but my cellphone will work just fine for my needs. Our phones are generally always with us and reachable for quick photo taking.

- Learn Your Camera: Whether it’s a smartphone or a fancy camera, get to know its features. Understanding how to adjust settings like exposure and focus will make your photos look great.
- Practice Composition: Good composition is key to eye-catching photos. Use the rule of thirds, where you divide the image into thirds and place your subject along these lines. It makes your photos more balanced and interesting.
- Use Natural Light: Natural light is your best friend. Try taking photos in the early morning or late afternoon when the light is soft and golden. Avoid harsh midday light that can create strong shadows.
- Experiment with Angles: Don’t just take photos from eye level. Try different angles—get low, go high, or shoot from the side. This adds variety and creativity to your photos.
- Keep It Steady: Shaky hands can blur your photos. Use a tripod or rest your camera on a stable surface to keep it steady and get sharp images.
- Edit Your Photos: A little editing can make a big difference. Learn basic editing skills to adjust brightness, contrast, and colors and to crop your photos. It’s like putting the final touch on your masterpiece.
