My View:
I see how I may need more emergency assistance as I get older when out and about. We all value our independence. Being able to go out and walk or drive from A to B without thinking of an emergency happens. We could trip and fall or have an accident with our car. Falls and even feel unwell. At these times, we would want to have first responders be able to reach out to family or trusted friends to get vital information about us. Before the internet and cell phones, we only had a medical alert bracelet. That had an 800 number with an ID # enscribbed into the bracelet to call to obtain contact information about the wearer in distress.
Today, smartphones, with built-in emergency contact lists and phone owner-added medical information, make it available to anyone without unlocking their phone. Emergency responders have instant access to a trusted friend or family member to contact, even medical info such as your medications, a pacemaker, or diabetes. All very important if. You are unconscious and incapacitated. Your cellphone can even detect a fall or have an emergency panic mode you can set so if you press the power button so many times, it calls 911 or emergency contact your pre-arrange during setup.
But what if you are unconscious and cannot speak to emergency responders? You become a John or Jane Doe mystery in the hospital emergency room. Your phone could be locked with a code so no one can access your phone to call relatives. Lucky smartphone makers saw the need to allow for access to emergency contacts and even display medical information to someone without unlocking your phone.
Most phones will display a menu for emergencies by pressing and holding the power button. Other watches and small devices use cellular networks ( smaller than a cell phone) . Some even have GPS and panic buttons to summon help. You can read my views on these devices here.
Be Safe. Always tell a trusted friend or relative when you are going out and when you plan to return, especially if it is somewhere you have never traveled to ( by foot, bike, or car). It may seem unneeded, but as we age, our reaction times are slower, and our eyesight and balance can get the best of us. So, at the very least, leave a note on the refrigerator with your departure time and destination and plan the time for your return.
