With age, our bodies sometimes tell us that what we try to do a simple task now may not be possible. I never thought putting on my sneakers on my feet one morning, as I had done since childhood, would make me bedridden for 3 days. I knew I had a lower back L4 disk problem for many years, due to an old injury. It never directly bothered me more than a backache once in a while. Then, one day, I sat on my bed, crossed my legs to reach down to put on my sneakers, and bam!!! It felt like lightning hit me in the back. My lower back was spasming in shocking pain waves. I could only lay on the floor and feel like I was being jolted by an electrical current every 45 seconds. My spouse helped me to lie flat on the bed. I lay there for 3 days, icing and heating the area.
The jolts “spasms” stopped. But moving was very painful. I called my Doctor who saw me and referred me to a physical therapist. After 4 days of work with my physical therapist I was back walking normally without pain. This has happened to me twice with the same results. I have learned my lesson: top site on the edge of the side settle and put the right shoe on, then switch sides and put the left shoe on. All without bending over or crossing my legs. My visit to the back surgeon resulted in a bulging disk in the L4 area. The good news was he said the way it is bulging and how the disk shrinks with age, it may be less of a problem as I get older. Well, I have taken my physical trainer exercises and do them every day to keep my back muscles stronger. It is all about core strength for me now.
